Transportation is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for a significant portion of global CO2 emissions. In fact, it is estimated that transportation contributes to around 23% of global energy-related CO2 emissions.
To begin with, Cars and Trucks are responsible for a significant portion of transportation emissions. In 2018, the global transportation sector emitted approximately 8.7 billion metric tons of CO2, with cars and trucks accounting for about 75% of that total.
To add to, Air Travel also has a substantial impact on climate change. In2019, the aviation industry accounted for about 2.5% of global CO2emissions. Although this may seem relatively small, it's important to note that emissions from airplanes have a higher climate impact due to the altitude at which they are released. But all this can be prevented and safer ways of transport can be used to reduce the emissions of CO2 gasses. Some of these measures are transition to electric vehicles.Electric vehicles (EVs) are becoming increasingly popular as a more sustainable alternative to traditional gasoline-powered cars. By switching to EVs, we can significantly reduce CO2 emissions and dependence on fossil fuels.
Also, improve public transportation. Investing in efficient and accessible public transportation systems can encourage people to use buses and trains instead of driving individual cars. This reduces congestion on the roads and decreases emissions.
Again, promote active transportation. Encouraging walking, cycling, and other forms of active transportation for short trips can have a positive impact on both personal health and the environment. It reduces the number of cars on the-road and lowers emissions.
Moreover, support sustainable aviation. While air travel emissions are challenging to eliminate entirely, advancements in technology and the use of sustainable aviation fuels can help reduce the carbon footprint of the aviation industry.
Additionally, land use planning. Designing cities and communities that prioritize mixed land-use development, with residential areas, workplaces, and amenities in close proximity, can reduce the need for long commutes and promote more sustainable transportation options. Remember, every small step towards sustainable transportation makes a difference in combating climate change. By making conscious choices and adopting greener alternatives, we can contribute to a more sustainable future.
